Local Projects - Iowa City A.M. Rotary

The Can-Do Project

Please donate your redeemable cans and plastic bottles to our collection trailer at the Sturgis Ferry Park Recycling Center, 1700 South Riverside Drive. Iowa City A.M. Rotarians, P.M. Rotarians, Rotaractors, and Interactors all volunteer together to sort the cans and bottles for redemption. We use proceeds from the hundreds of thousands of cans and plastic bottles collected each year to support many of Johnson County’s non-profit human services organizations, recently as much as $11,000/year.

The Dictionary Project

Each year, the area Rotary Clubs collaborate to donate and deliver dictionaries to all of the X graders in the Iowa City Community School District. This is a fun and fast project which promotes literacy.

The Food Fight

Annually in July, the area Rotary Clubs have a friendly competition for “the golden turkey” while raising funds and food donated to support CommUnity, our local food bank.

Once again, the organizing committee has committed to purchasing fresh fruits and vegetables from the Twin County Produce Auction in Kalona. This approach not only supports local farmers but also enables CommUnity to receive nutritious, locally grown produce—while stretching our donations to provide more pounds of food than traditional procurement methods. This year’s challenge will run through August 31st.

The Rotary District 6000 Humanitarian and Educational Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, will assist by collecting contributions and reimbursing the Kalona farmers. If you’d like to make a financial contribution, please make the check payable to D6000 H.E.F. and include “Food Fight — [Your Club’s Name]” in the memo line, then mail to:

Gift-Wrapping on Christmas Eve

Annually on Christmas Eve, the Iowa City A.M. Rotary Club volunteers to wrap gifts for free-will donations at the Coral Ridge Mall. All funds donated are used to support local projects. This is a fun and festive annual tradition!
